5 Handy Tips For Making Your Home More Saleable

Making The Most Of Lockdown – 5 Handy Tips For Making Your Home More Saleable

There is no getting away from the fact that Covid-19 has had a huge impact on all of our lives over the course of the last few months, with most of us having to spend an extended period in the safety of our own homes. For many of us, this has raised the very valid question of what to do with all of the enforced spare time.

Well, if you’re intending to sell your property in the near future, you should think of self-isolation as an opportunity to take action and with this in mind, we offer up 5 handy DIY tips to improve the saleability of your home that won’t break the bank. Everybody’s feeling the pinch right now, so we’ve made our tips nice and budget-friendly.

Tip #1 – Declutter, Declutter, Declutter

The first tip on our list will cost you absolutely nothing at all, as it focuses on achieving a minimalist look inside your home. Potential buyers tend to be majorly put off too much clutter in the home and for good reason, as it makes rooms look smaller and less inviting. When purging your home of your accumulated possessions, you need to be ruthless.

A good way to look at what to keep and what not to keep is whether you’ve used the object in question in the last 6 months and whether you’re likely to in the next 6 months. If the answer to both is no, then the chances are that you don’t really need it, so get rid of it!

You don’t necessarily have to throw things away though, as a good declutter can often result in you having a number of things to sell on online auction sites like eBay. As well as helping to make your home look cleaner, fresher and more inviting, you might earn a few dollars in the process.

Tip #2 – A Lick of Paint

Another relatively quick, easy and cost-effective way to make your home look fresh and new is with a new coat of paint. Combined with the aforementioned decluttering, refreshing your paintwork with a nice light coloured matt emulsion can completely transform the appearance of any room.

Try using the tried and trusted option that is neutral or pastel shades to create a modern and welcoming aesthetic to your paintwork. Aside from a not too inconsiderable amount of elbow grease, this method involves a nominal cost that delivers much in terms of enhancing your home’s look.

Tip #3 – Let the Light In

Another key element to harness is natural sunlight, as the more that enters into your home, the better it will look. In addition to using light coloured paint to help sunlight bounce around your property, light levels can be enhanced by getting creative.

The first job you can do is a simple one and it involves making sure your windows are spotlessly clean or you could strategically place mirrors opposite your windows to increase the light coming in. Replacing darker blinds and curtains can also really help to make things feel less gloomy.

Basically, you should be looking at all of the dark areas of your home and finding ways to lighten them up. You could use candles, table lamps or if you’re lucky enough to have an open fireplace, make sure there’s a roaring fire in it when viewers come by to look around.

Tip #4 – Focus Your Attention on the Kitchen

In estate industry circles, it’s well known that your kitchen is the most valuable part of your house and it’s a key factor for anyone considering making an offer on your property. If you do have some budget to play with, we’d recommend investing a good portion of it to the kitchen, however, you don’t have to spend a fortune to achieve a major improvement.

Replacing cupboard doors, re-grouting your tiles and adding some new taps can inject new life into your kitchen without leaving too much of a dent in your finances. Replacing blinds and steam cleaning your kitchen floor can also have a hugely uplifting effect.

Tip #5 – Work On Your Curb Appeal

First impressions really count when selling your home, so you need to make sure yours is up to scratch. Your home needs to look well looked-after from the outside or they’re going to think that the inside is going to be the same. A home with curb appeal will have a swept path, a mown lawn, undamaged fences and well-kept window boxes and flower pots.

Giving your front door a nice new paint job will also significantly improve the way the front of your home looks, so it’s well worth the time and effort it takes. If you’re not sure where to start, stand outside your property and look at it as if you were going to buy it. When you see something that would put you off…deal with it.
